Aim: In Turkey the training for midwifery has started during 1800s for the first time and currently continues with bachelor and master degree programmes. With the study it has been aimed to do an assesment and introduction of the academical and physical conditions of the midwifery departments in our country. Method: Sample selection has not been done for the descriptive study, but it has been aimed to acquire the whole population. The ethical and legal permissions have been taken to carry out the study. Data has been analyzed by SPSS program. In Turkey the first midwifery department for bachelor degree level has been opened in 1996. Within the 35 out of 46 midwifery departments there are in total 183 instructors. Results: According to the results of the study it has been determined that there are universities in which midwifery bachelor degree education is not going on, and so far 9.461 midwifes have graduated. It has also been found out that 37.5% of the instructors of these departments are midwifes and bachelor degree education for midwifery is being provided mainly by the other instructors from other disciplines. With the second frequency the heads of the departments of midwifery are midwifes. It has been detected that the most frequent problems that the instructors are facing during the working life are the huge number of the students, the inefficiency of the execution areas, and the problems related to academical improvement and promotion. Conclusion and Recommendations: According to the findings obtained in the research, it was determined that the number of academic staff and physical profiles were insufficient in the midwifery departments. The required attempts have to be embarked to determine academic staff and the physical needs of the departments and to prepare action plans towards the needs. Besides it is required to strenghten the structures of midwifery training and education programmes in international scope and to train midwifery academists.
