Objective: The study was carried out to determine the patients’ discharge learning needs after a urologic surgery.
Material and Methods: This descriptive study was carried out in the urology clinic of a university hospital. The study sample included individuals who were 18 years and older, had elective surgery with general and spinal anesthesia, and had no sensory-perceptual problems or psychiatric illnesses. 112 patients were contacted between the dates determined. Data were collected through a Patient Information Form and the Patient Learning Needs Scale. The data obtained in the study were analyzed using a computer-based statistical system. The statistical significance level was accepted as P < .05.
Results: The total mean score of the patient learning needs was 165.23±30.64. In addition, it was observed that there was a difference between age, marital status, income status, presence of past surgical experience, and the discharge learning needs (P < .05).
Conclusion: According to the results obtained, it was observed that the discharge learning needs of urology patients after surgery was in the “medium–high level” range. In addition, it was determined that the primary education requirement was “treatment and complications.” Nurses should consider the characteristics of the individual patients and disease when planning pre-discharge training.
