Objective: This study was carried out to determine the effect of verbal or brochure training about breast milk-breastfeeding and infant care on the knowledge levels of mothers.

Materials and Methods: A total of 71 mothers who had just given birth (brochure group: 34 mothers, verbal training group: 37 mothers) in a hospital affiliated to the Ministry of Health constituted the sample of this experimental study. Data collection was initiated after ethical and institutional permissions were obtained. The socio-demographic form comprising 9 questions and the information form comprising 43 questions aimed at evaluating the knowledge levels of mothers were used in data collection. The information form was applied just before and 1 month after the training. The brochure group was given a brochure containing information on breast milk-breastfeeding and infant care. The verbal training group was verbally provided with the information in the brochure.

Results: When study groups were compared in terms of socio-demographic characteristics (maternal education level, status, family type, number of children, etc.), there was no statistically significant difference between them. The mean post-training knowledge scores (brochure: t=−6.590, p=0.000; verbal: t=−7.402, p=0.000) on breast milk-breastfeeding (brochure: t=−3.791, p=0.001; verbal: t=−6.946, p=0.000) and infant care of both verbal and brochure groups were found to be significantly increased as compared to the knowledge levels before training. There was no significant difference between the groups in terms of breast milk-breastfeeding knowledge scores (t=1.692, p=0.095) and infant care knowledge scores (t=0.030, p=0.976).

Conclusion: Two training methods used to provide training on breast milk-breastfeeding and infant care (giving brochure and verbal expression) increased the knowledge levels of mothers. It is recommended to use both training methods for new mothers.
