Empathic Tendency Levels and Problem Solving Skills of Nursing Students

Object: The study was performed to determine the empathic tendency level and problem solving skills of nursing students. Methods: The study population consisted of undergraduate nursing students of a university during the 2017-2018 academic year. Any specific sampling method was not determined and only the voluntary students was enrolled in the study. The data of research were gathered by using an information document including descriptive feature of the students and Empathic Tendency Scale and Problem Solving Inventory. Data were analysed by using SPSS 23.0 package program. In the analysis of data percentage, mean, Mann-Whitney U test, Kruscall Wallis variance analysis and Spearman correlation were used. Results: The average age of the students in the Department of Nursing is 20.91 ± 2.25’dır. Nursing students’ Empathic Tendency average score was determined 68.68±8.78. Students’ problem-solving inventory mean score was 96.12±20.27, personal control subscale mean score was 20.85±3.43, reliance subscale mean score was 31.08±9.81, convergence/avoidance subscale mean score was 47.76±10.83. Conclusion: Nursing students’ empathic tendency level and problem solving skill level was found as moderate. It was concluded that the use of training programs to develop problem solving and empathy tendencies during nursing education will improve problem solving skills and empathy tendencies among nursing students.
