Objective: The purpose of the present study was to determine health perceptions and health promotion behaviors of workers working in an industrial field, to investigate the relationship between health perceptions and health promotion behaviors, and to determine the factors that affect its.
Materials and methods: The descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted between April 2014 and June 2014. No sample was selected in the study, and the sample of the research was workers working in Opet Fuchs Madeni Yağ San. Tic. and Aygaz A.Ş. located in Işıkkent and Aliağa in İzmir (N=160). Data were collected through a questionnaire consisting of 17 questions developed in line with the literature and through the “Healthy Life Style Behaviour Scale” and “Health Perception Scale.” Data were analyzed using SPSS package program. For statistical analysis, Mann–Whitney U test, Kruskal–Wallis test, and Spearman correlation test were used. The study was conducted after approval from the local ethics committee.
Results: The mean score of the Healthy Life Style Behaviour Scale of workers was found to be 121.0±23.8 (minimum score: 60 and maximum score: 192). The mean score of the Health Perception Scale of workers was found to be 48.8±6.3 (minimum score: 34 and maximum score: 66). The correlation (rs=0.43) between the Healthy Life Style Behaviour Scale and the Health Perception Scale of the workers indicated a moderate positive correlation (p<0.001).
Conclusion: Workers’ healthy lifestyle behaviors and health perception levels are above average and at a good level. As the health perceptions of workers increase, the health promotion behaviors also increase.
