The Effect of Mobile Application Supported Exercise Program on Pain, Quality of Life and Work Performance in Healthy Office Workers

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the effects of mobile-application-based exercises on pain, quality of life, and work performance in office workers and to determine whether it was an alternative to traditional methods.

Material and Methods: The 60 participants included in the study were randomized into 2 groups: Group 1 (mobile application group) and group 2 (exercise brochure). The participants in group 1 exercised using the mobile application 5 days a week, and notifications were sent to the participants 4 times a day. The participants in group 2 exercised using the brochures 5 days a week. A demographic information form for work timing and painful areas, visual analog scale for evaluation of pain, Nottingham health profile for quality of life, and work role functionality survey for job performance were used. SPSS version 20.0 was used for data analysis.

Results: After exercising, there were statistically significant changes in pain, quality of life, and work performance scores in both the groups (P < .05). Compared with Group 1, Group 2 was statistically superior in pain scores, emotional reactions, physical activity, sleep parameters of quality of life scale, and all scores of job performance survey (P < .05).

Conclusion: In our study, the exercise program implemented by 2 different methods in office workers provided significant changes in pain, quality of life, and work performance and it was stated that the mobile application-supported exercise programs could be an alternative treatment for office workers.
