Objective: It is stated that insufficient sleep in pregnancy is associated with prolonged labor, more pain, premature birth and increased rates of cesarean section. This research was conducted to determine the effect of sleep quality on the duration of labor and labor pain during pregnancy. Methods: The esearch data being cross-sectional and descriptive desing was collected in between June 2011-March 2012. The population of study consists of 120 pregnant women, the sample consists of 92 pregnant women who meet the inclusion criteria. The Personal Information Form, Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index, Epworth Sleepiness Scale and Visual Pain Scale were used to collect the data. Findings: 91.3% of pregnant women were found to be poor quality of sleep. It was determined that back, waist and leg pain in pregnancy affected sleep quality negatively (p<0.05). It was determined that the duration of third stage of labor was longer in pregnant women who had poor sleep quality (p<0.00) and they felt more pain at this phase (p<0.01). There were no significant differences between the duration of sleep and the length of labor. It was seen that primigravida pregnant women not having daytime sleepiness (p<0.00) had the third stage of labor was longer and felt more pain at this stage (p<0.02). Conclusion: Various problems related to pregnancy affects the quality of sleep. These problems should be revised in antenatal follow-up. It can be said that sleep quality affects the duration of labor and labor pain.
