Examination of the effect of the Family-Centered Approach of the Empathic Trends of Children's Nurses and Students

Objectives: The aim of the research was conducted to investigate the relationship between their parent’s participation with empathic tendencies of pediatric nursing and nursing students. Materials and Method: This cross-sectional analytical type study was conducted during the academic year of 2016-2017.There search was carried out with nurses working in children's clinics and students taking courses in child health and diseases nursing. Student information form, nurse information form, empathic tendency scale and parental participation scalewere used to collect the data. Results: It wasfound that nursing students and nurses had medium level of empathic tendency, students had higher empathic tendencies than nurses, and empathic tendency was higher in girl students. Students who did not have a chronic illness and who did not stay in the hospital for a long time were found to have significantly higher empathic tendency scores. Students reported more support for parental involvement and higher scores than nurses. There was a weak relationship between parental involvement and empathic tendency in the positive, while a weak relationship between age and parental involvement was found in the negative. A weak relationship was determined between nurses' working years and empathic tendencies on the negative side. Conclusion: The empathic tendency and parental involvement levels of the students were better than the nurses, as the empathic tendency increases, the level of support for parental involvement increases.
